The SMMT’s latest State of the Automotive Nation report shows not a single UK manufacturer believes they’re on track to meet the 80% EV sales requirement by 2030.
-
74% say they’re significantly behind.
-
26% say they’re slightly behind.
-
0% say they’re on track.
Manufacturers are worried about fines, uncertain policy, and lack of support for the tougher parts of electrification. The SMMT wants the government to review the mandate sooner, alongside improving EU relations and stabilising industrial strategy.
Why it matters:
The industry has already tackled the easy wins, depot‑based fleets, early adopters, and well‑funded organisations. What’s left are the hard‑to-electrify vehicles, cash‑strapped fleets, and SMEs with no guidance.
