Unmarked crossroads are the most disliked junction type among UK drivers, according to new research from the AA, but they are far from the most dangerous.
A survey found that 23% of drivers disliked unmarked crossroads the most, ahead of yellow box junctions, staggered junctions, mini roundabouts and slip roads.
However, Department for Transport data shows that T-junctions and staggered junctions account for the highest number of casualties, with more than 34,000 people killed or injured at them in 2024.
The figures also highlight the risks associated with turning across traffic, which resulted in nearly three times as many casualties as turning left.
The AA suggests that the uncertainty of unmarked crossroads may actually encourage safer behaviour because drivers slow down and take more time to assess the situation.

Sometimes what drivers fear isn’t what’s actually dangerous.
Unmarked crossroads feel uncomfortable because there’s less guidance, but that lack of signage can actually make drivers slow down and think. And if there’s one universal rule for junctions, it’s simple: slow down, look properly, and if you’re not sure… wait.
“I bet a lot of people don’t actually know the difference between all those junction types. A staggered junction is the tricky one — you’re often stuck in the middle of the road and people behind you don’t always realise what’s happening.”
