Transitioning to an electric van charged via overnight depot or home electricity drops that cost to just £369.24 annually, delivering a direct operational saving of £2,400.70 per vehicle.
Commercial van operators switching to battery power could reduce annual fuel bills by up to 87 percent, according to data from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles.
A study of more than 1,000 UK van drivers revealed that 58 percent view the widening gap between diesel prices and electricity costs as their primary motivation for making the transition. With forecourt diesel rising from around 145p per litre in late 2025 to over 183p per litre in September 2026, fuel inflation has added significant operating pressure to fleets and sole traders.
Based on an average annual mileage of 13,190 miles, a conventional diesel van demands around £2,770 in fuel every year. Transitioning to an electric van charged via overnight depot or home electricity drops that cost to just £369.24 annually, delivering a direct operational saving of £2,400.70 per vehicle.
Appetite for electric light commercial vehicles continues to build across the trade. Two-thirds of drivers surveyed confirmed electric vans fit their operational requirements, with 61 percent actively planning to acquire one within the next 12 months.
John Ricardo-Neto, head of product planning at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, pointed out that a 30 percent jump in diesel expenses over the past year has transformed the business case for battery power. Beyond substantial fuel savings, operators benefit directly from reduced maintenance requirements, quieter operation, and a smoother driving experience during daily duties.
The EV Cafe Perspective
John:
With forecourt diesel pushing toward £2 per litre, an 87% reduction in fuel spend, saving over £2,400 a year per van, is impossible for businesses to ignore. We have got to turn high purchase intent into actual registrations on the road."
Sam:
The commercial argument is totally proven, but it isn't 'new news' to operators, we need to get the real-world experience out there. The best way to break scepticism is through peer-to-peer trial: getting local drivers behind the wheel so they see the maintenance, fuel, and health benefits firsthand."
Sara:
Peer review is the single most powerful marketing tool in this sector. When genuine tradespeople and van drivers share their actual running costs and experiences, it carries far more weight than any corporate brochure."
